The Unseen Load of Motherhood

I want to take a minute to encourage any moms whose job is to be a mom. While yes, I think this will be fruitful for any mom, I think there are many challenges and beautiful things that come from staying at home. My prayer is that I can speak life over you and share some of God’s word with you!

A mothers load is heavy and it can be quite tiresome. There are many things that are very unique to motherhood and I know this is by design! We are in a constant state of serving. Whether it be serving our children throughout the night etc. I believe that this is the way God created it to be

As a mother, I think there are a lot of people relying on you and a lot of responsibilities placed on your shoulders. Right now, breastfeeding is one thing that relies heavily on me. I have a child who relies solely on me to be fed and nourished. Sometimes it does feel like a lot of pressure. I love breastfeeding. Every month that passes, I celebrate because I think it is a really big deal!

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-30

While yes, this verse is talking about eternal rest. As a mother, who likely has a laundry list of things to do, Christ is telling us His burden is light, He is not giving us a list of things to do. We can come to Him and find rest.

Since we are talking about Jesus. I believe that being a mother means to be a servant. A lot of us fight this. However, I think when we fight this, we are feeding our flesh and being like the world. The world is selfish, after their own ambitions, and wants to be served instead of serve. Being a mother though is to serve, to love unconditionally, to get up in the middle of the night, to give up our body – it requires us to be a servant through and through. However, how encouraging is it that when we look at Jesus and His time on Earth, that being a servant was His whole purpose. So, if you are ever overwhelmed by being a servant, can I encourage you to read the Gospels? Read all about Jesus’ life what what it meant and looked like for Him to serve us.

It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Matthew 20:26-28

As parents, we are currently in a season of our children wanting to know “why”. Jordan and I were talking with one of our children recently about why we allow certain things and why we don’t allow others. This conversation took place after I had a very full day and required me to rely on the Lord for wisdom. As we were speaking with our child, we kept driving in the fact that children are a gift from the Lord

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord , the fruit of the womb a reward.

Psalm 127:3

The Lord gives good gifts. Every good gift comes from the Lord and once we remember that, we are also reminded that the child in front of us is really not ours but they belong to the Lord. So, the question becomes “how can I best steward this gift that has been given to me?”. While yes, we may always have things to do but what is our most important work? I would argue that our children are our most important work and the home and everything else comes second! As we read Titus 2 though, it tells us that we are to be keepers of the home. Proverbs 31 details how she maintains her home- so where is the line? I think its a great reminder that we need to be diligent with our time. Maybe the kids are playing and you can find a pocket of time to get some things done. However, this all will depend on how many children you have, their age, etc. How you manage your time will likely change month to month! This is why we really need to rely on the wisdom of the Lord. However, the question still remains  “how can I best steward this gift that has been given to me?”. We will all stand before God and give an accountant for how we stewarded our lives but also how we stewarded our children’s lives.

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

2 Corinthians 5:10

Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:

Proverbs 31:28

I look back at when I was a child and my parents were pretty strict with things. At the time, I hated it, I thought it was awful and I opposed them. However, now, I look back and praise God they didn’t let me do sleepovers, they didn’t let me watch that really demonic movie etc. Now, as a mother, I can look back and call my mother blessed because she did the due diligence in keeping my peace and innocence. She didn’t just haphazardly do things. She wasn’t seeking to please me but had more fear of the Lord than fear of the world. As mothers, let us have more fear of God than the world. May we care more about what the Lord thinks of what we are doing. We will not stand before people. We will stand before the Almighty God and give an account to Him.

Let us ask and also depend on the Lord for wisdom because He gives it generously. Let us scroll through our Bibles more than our phones. Let us go to our Bibles and prayer first before texting our friends complaining about our children. Let us go to Titus 2 women for wisdom rather than women who are bashing their husbands and cursing their children. Let us use the gift of fellowship to point us toward Christ and to convict us to live a life that glories Christ, not ourselves. Let us live a life that boasts of Him and not ourselves. Let us hold onto God’s word as if it is the only thing that keeps us alive – because it is!
